TCO Analysis | Fuel vs Auxiliary Electric Motor Sweeper Truck

Sep 30 , 2026

When purchasing road sweepers, many fleet managers only focus on upfront purchase price and overlook long-term operating costs.Traditional diesel sweepers rely on the chassis engine to power both travel and sweeping systems, forcing the engine to run at high RPM continuously during cleaning. This leads to high fuel consumption, faster component wear and frequent downtime.

What if you could separate the sweeping power from the vehicle driving system?

We break down the full-lifecycle TCO, energy consumption, maintenance expenses and practical operating limits, to help you decide which solution delivers better value for your sanitation project.

♦ In traditional fuel powered sweeper scrubbers, the chassis engine drives both the blower and the sweeping brushes.Consequently, the engine maintains high RPMs even during low-speed sweeping operations, resulting in wasted fuel, excessive noise, and high exhaust emissions. Furthermore, prolonged idling accelerates engine wear and shortens maintenance intervals.

♦ In the new BYD electric sweeper, propulsion is provided by the chassis motor. During sweeping operations, the motor handles both driving and vacuuming functions, ensuring that power delivery for these tasks does not interfere with one another.

The chassis motor powers vehicle propulsion, while an independent auxiliary motor is dedicated to driving the entire superstructure's operational mechanisms including the blower, sweeping discs, water pump, and hydraulic pump thereby completely separating the propulsion power from the sweeping power.

♦ Pulley Drive Assembly: The auxiliary motor drives a high flow centrifugal fan via a multi-ribbed belt, generating powerful negative-pressure suction.

♦ Hydraulic and Water Systems: Features an independent cooling/reservoir tank, a high-pressure water pump, and a pneumatic control valve assembly. This system independently controls hydraulic lifting and water spraying functions.

♦ High Voltage Orange Wiring Harness: Includes a high voltage power distribution module and independent power supply for the auxiliary motor, allowing the operating mechanisms to be started or stopped individually. The vehicle chassis does not need to remain running during stationary sweeping operations.

⇒ Advantage for Electric Sweeper Trucks:

1. Energy Optimization: The auxiliary motor speed can be adjusted based on cleaning requirements. Whether performing low-speed maintenance cleaning, rapid inspections, or deep scrubbing/sweeping, the fan power is independently adjustable, significantly reducing electricity consumption per unit area.

2. Reduced Noise: Powered by an auxiliary motor and an electric fan, the vehicle eliminates the roaring noise associated with engine idling, making it ideal for nighttime street cleaning and operations in residential areas.

3. Extended Vehicle Lifespan: The chassis drive motor is relieved of the continuous load from the superstructure, drastically reducing chassis wear. Additionally, the independent superstructure design allows for separate maintenance of the auxiliary motor and fan without disturbing the chassis powertrain.

4. Stable Suction Performance: The large fan is driven at a constant speed by the auxiliary motor, ensuring that negative-pressure suction does not diminish when the vehicle climbs slopes or decelerates (a common issue in older models where suction drops as engine speed falls during deceleration).
